Abstract :

This paper explores the impact of basic education in developing future female leaders in Zamfara State. Basic education from the Nigerian context, deals with the provision of education from the primary up to the first three years of the secondary level of education. It is the basic foundation for preparing female children for any leadership responsibility in their future endeavours. Leadership roles should not be restricted to males only, as females have a role to play in nation-building. This study adopts a qualitative research approach. Therefore, both secondary and primary sources were used. The secondary sources included books, journals, and other relevant materials, while the primary sources comprised individual oral interviews and discursive interviews. The study used purposive sampling techniques to select important personalities with vast experience in education and leadership in three local governments, such as Zurmi, Maru, and Shinkafi. The findings of the seminar reveal that age-long cultural stereotypes deter many parents from allowing their female children to develop future leadership careers. The community leaders are optimistic about girl-child education and the leadership career of female children. This is evidenced in the way all the community leaders in the three local governments responded with positive notes on the plight of girlchild education. The paper recommends among others that the governors and traditional leaders in northern Nigeria should collaborate in sensitizing the parents to the need to allow their female children to acquire basic education and cherish leadership careers.
