Nigeria has faced myriads of security challenges ranging from the Boko Haram insurgency to farmer-herder conflict, kidnappings and banditry, resuscitation of the secessionist movement, militia activities, ritual killings, piracy, and attacks on security personnel and installations, among others. The paper examines the dynamics of insurgency, banditry, and other forms of terrorism activities in some of the northern states of Nigeria that share boundaries with neighbouring West African countries. Despite government efforts to resolve some of these security challenges, they persist. This is due to so many dynamics and elements that are working against the government's war on terrorism and banditry. Using both qualitative and descriptive methods, generated from primary and secondary sources, the article reveals that the factors that fuel insecurity challenges in the area of study include; high level of corruption among security agencies, Nigeria’s porous borders, accommodation and appeasement of terrorists, and bandits, and above all Nigeria geographical features. The study concludes that to resolve the security challenges confronting the region the government needs to effectively deploy both kinetic and nonkinetic methods of warfare.
